  1. Joint Leadership Team Web Poll

You correctly guessed that the Exploration Flight Test-1 mission is crew-less. I didn't fool you on that one. This week we are trying out a new experiment in outdoor meetings. The "Sputnik" airstream has been re-purposed into a meeting area and moved to the north side of pond 1. It's open for anyone's use to hang out, hold a meeting or do quiet work. It used to be something else before the conversion. What was it? Mobile command post? Mobile photo lab? Senior staff retreat center? Your favorite sports fact was the odds any one cow faces becoming a Super Bowl football. This week I've got the outdoors on my mind. At what temperature is outdoor happiness maximized? Sixty degrees? Seventy degrees? Ninety degrees?

R your V on over to get this week's poll.

  1. Sputnik Outdoor Meeting Area Opens

One of Center Operations' goals this year is to expand the use and enjoyment of the outdoor mall pond area. We decided to conduct a low-cost experiment this winter with an excess Airstream trailer and created an outdoor meeting and gathering area at the north end of the Building 1 pond.

This meeting area, named "Sputnik," features sustainable power in the form of a solar generator, indoor work areas and meeting space and outdoor sitting areas.

The space is open for any employees use without scheduling. Lunchtime events (music, meet and greets, etc.) will be posted on the sandwich board on the sidewalk each day. Please take a minute to stop by an explore this new space. Further info on its use is available from Leah Galindo or by visiting this website.

  1. Early Space Shuttle Programmatic Decisions Panel

Come join us on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. in the Teague Auditorium, where the NASA Alumni League (NAL), in conjunction with the JSC Chief Knowledge Officer, is sponsoring a storytelling event focusing on "Early Space Shuttle Programmatic Decisions."

The program will focus on the Phase A and B concepts that were studied and how NASA arrived at the conceptual baseline that was developed during the subsequent design and development phases, as well as the management/organizational approach used during the development phase and the effectiveness of that management approach.

Panel Moderator: Wayne Hale, Flight Director and Space Shuttle Program (SSP) Manager

Panelists:

Robert F. Thompson - Initial SSP Manager

Owen Morris - Manager, Level 2 Systems Engineering and Integration activity

Richard Kohrs - Subsequent SSP Manager

Dr. Hum Mandell - SSP Cost Estimation Manager

Each panelist will speak about an aspect of shuttle history and design evolution. All are welcome.

  1. Enjoy This, You Will

IT Labs continues to celebrate NASA's Information Technology (IT) innovators in this edition of the "IT Heroes Showcase." Next Monday we are featuring a live, multi-point demo from Ames Research Center, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and JSC for the "Persistent Telepresence Portal Network" (PTPN) project. PTPN uses commercial off-the-shelf products to test the social concept of providing an open window between centers for meetings and social engagement.

Testing this technology in common, high-traffic areas with real users is the goal, and future vision expands upon the interface hardware to create more engagement and a virtual sense of multiparty presence, whether that be via a video wall in a conference room or holographic imagery (as in the Jedi High Council Chamber).

This 30-minute presentation will be conducted via Google+ Hangouts live on air. Check out the IT Labs Blog for more details.

Event Date: Monday, November 18, 2013   Event Start Time:11:30 AM   Event End Time:12:00 PM
Event Location: Google+ Hangouts Live on Air

  1. Caregiver Support Awareness

How are you? Do you find yourself strained between work and family responsibilities? Caregivers are often so concerned with caring for their relative's needs that they lose sight of their own well-being. Securing support from other family members, friends and community groups is essential. It may be hard to ask for and/or accept help, but you cannot do it all alone. Come and learn why caregivers need care, caregiving skills, caregiver resources and how to manage work and caregiving.

In recognition of National Family Caregivers Month, please join Anika Isaac, MS, LPC, LMFT, CEAP, NCC, LCDC, on Nov. 20 in the Building 30 Auditorium from 12 noon to 1 p.m. as she presents Caregiver Support Awareness.
