Subject: Supernova danger
The star WR 104, 8,000 light-years from Earth, is showing
signs of becoming more unstable, and could possibly explode
into a supernova in the future. This would be catastrophic
to all life on Earth, so hopefully that won't happen any time
soon. There would be no advance warning, since the visible
light and the gamma ray burst would arrive at the same time.

Supernovas like this are the biggest threat to life on Earth,
and can destroy all life within a radius of 1000 light-years.
Asteroid impacts are more likely, but those can be detected
in advance. Evidence indicates that a supernova was likely
the cause of the massive Ordovician extinction 440 million
years ago (before the dinosaurs), when two-thirds of all
species on Earth were destroyed. (See the article below.)
That supernova then was 10,000 light-years away, and WR 104
is even closer.
