To the JSC community:

This afternoon,  I met with JSC senior leaders and shared that I've named Steve Altemus as our new Deputy Center Director and Lauri Hansen as our new Director of Engineering.   I considered several candidates for these positions and talked with a number of senior leaders at HQ and JSC, not only about specific candidates but about the state of JSC and what changes and initiatives will most help the agency meet its goals.  In particular, I looked for a deputy who would complement my skills and be a partner in helping JSC take a fresh look at how we do business so that we can make visible strides in making human space flight affordable and sustainable.

Steve has served as the JSC Director of Engineering at JSC since 2006, after serving as Deputy Director of Engineering for a year.  Steve brings valuable experience from another NASA center, having spent 16 years at KSC in a variety of roles including Shuttle Test Director, Chief of the Launch and Landing Division, and a special assignment as Columbia Reconstruction Director.  While Director of Engineering at JSC, Steve has championed new ways of doing business, including fostering a lean, rapid-prototyping approach to technology development to meet the challenge of affordable and sustainable space exploration. He has also served as a leader of various mission-concept studies requested by HEOMD, and has been a key supporter of the Agency's Engineering Management Board, which encourages cross-talk among the Engineering directors across the agency.  Steve is widely known as an innovative thinker and will bring a fresh perspective to the Center Director's office.

Lauri Hansen brings a wealth of experience that includes senior leadership roles in technical, programmatic and institutional organizations. Most recently, she has served as the Center Director's Chief of Staff; among the many strengths she has brought to that position is her strong advocacy of the Inclusion and Innovation efforts across JSC.  Her focus on developing employees, in addition to all of her technical skills, will be very important in the position of Director of Engineering in which close to a third of the civil servants at JSC will report to her.   She previously held 3 key leadership positions within the Constellation Program as Director, Systems Engineering and Integration, Manager of the Altair Project Office, and Director, Safety, Reliability & Quality Assurance.  Those roles utilized her noted integration skills and involved coordination among all NASA centers as well as use of novel contracting mechanisms focused on affordable systems and spacecraft development.  Previously, Lauri has held the positions of Deputy of JSC's Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate and Deputy Director of Engineering, following managerial roles in both the Engineering Directorate and the ISS Program Office.

I believe that JSC must continually evolve in order to provide the best leadership and support to human space flight exploration -- and these personnel selections will help us continue to move in the right direction.
