Roscosmos proposes to speed up Angara launch site construction at Vostochny

BLAGOVESHCHENSK. April 12 (Interfax-AVN) - Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) head Vladimir Popovkin has called for speeding up the construction of an Angara heavy rocket launch site at the Vostochny Space Center in the Amur region.

"Bearing in mind the development of a Soyuz-2 launch site at Vostochny we would like to accelerate the building of an Angara launch site at that spaceport," Popovkin said at the space industry development conference on Friday. He said they wished to prevent the loss of personnel in the period between two construction projects.

As to Russia's guaranteed access to outer space, Popovkin singled out three stages in the Vostochny Space Center project. The first stage (before 2015) "will include preparations to launch a Soyuz-2 medium rocket and thereby ensure positioning of any types of satellites," he said. "That is a large horse," Popovkin said about Soyuz-2.

The second stage will last until 2018 and end with the launch of an Angara heavy rocket. "Thereby, we will cover the entire niche of communication and retransmission satellites," he said.

Speaking of the Angara advantages, Popovkin said that contemporary Proton rockets could bring 20-ton payloads to low orbits. Angara would transport payloads of 25 tons.

"We need to go beyond this niche. So, we are working on a super-heavy rocket with the lifting capacity of 75-80 tons. It will have open architecture for the prospective enlargement of payloads to 130 tons and support to the Martian program," he said.
